Great Dancers Master These Foundations:

  • Frame

  • The Walk

  • Axis Awareness

  • The Embrace

What Level Tango Dancer Am I?

Beginner:

Generally if you’ve been dancing Argentine Tango for less than 1 year or under 200 hours, you’d likely be considered a beginner.

Improver:

You have a firm grasp on the etiquette and foundations, enough so to navigate a milonga. You’re also starting to understand and moderately execute the following:

  • Walking

  • Frame

  • Axis Awareness

  • Side Steps

  • Rock Steps

  • Check Steps

  • Stop & Go

Intermediate:

You could likely be considered an intermediate dancer after 200 - 1000 hrs (or 1 - 5 yrs) of dancing Argentine Tango, as well as having mastered the following:

  • The ability to hear and mark time to Argentine Tango as well as Vals and Milonga music.

  • You understand the concept of parallel as well as crossed feet and can lead / follow between them.

  • Leaders can maintain line of dance and can wait for the follower to complete their step before leading another. If you’re the follower, you can collect and wait for the lead.

  • Understand the difference between open and close embrace and can comfortably dance in both.

  • You can consistently execute the following moves solo or with a partner in time to the music while maintaining your own axis or balance:

  • Marking Time

  • Walking Forward & Backward

  • Side Steps

  • Check Left Turn

  • Cruzada (Cross)

  • Back Ocho

  • Forward Ocho

Advanced:

After roughly over 1000 hours (roughly 5 yrs) of collective Argentine Tango dancing, you could possibly consider yourself an advanced dancer so long as you also have the following mastered:

  • All prior criteria met

  • Have the ability to lead in close embrace from chest only

  • Can dance comfortably in parallel and crossed feet to both sides of your partner

  • Can also correctly and consistently execute the following steps solo and with a partner in time to music, while maintaining your own axis and balance:

  • Molinetes

  • Ocho Cortados

  • Boleos

  • Ganchos

Basic Milonga Etiquette:

Requesting someone to dance is usually done with a Mirada (a look) and a Cabeceo (a nod). Typically you’ll dance with the same partner for a full Tanda (3 - 4 songs).  You’ll also need to know line of dance,  entrance to the dance floor, and more!
